3월의 TED Circles 추천 강연

TED Circles는 TED의 새로운 이니셔티브로서, TED 강연을 시청하고 함께 아이디어를 나누는 소규모 모임입니다. TED Circles에서는 TED가 선정한 네 개의 TED 영상 중 하나를 선택하여 함께 시청하고, TED에서 제공하는 질문들로 참가자들의 생각을 함께 나누게 됩니다.

매월 TED에서 주제를 정하고 관련 TED 영상 4개를 추천하는데요, 전 세계의 TED Circles에 참여하는 사람들이 하나의 주제를 가지고 모이는, 전 지구적인 대화(global conversation)를 촉진하는데 목적이 있습니다. 예를 들면 기후변화(기후위기). 사랑, 더 나은 인류, 정의와 정의와 사회, 미래 등입니다.

이번 3월 TED Circles의 주제는 'Who has power(누가 권력을 가지고 있는가)'인데요, TED에서는 아래와 같이 4개의 강연들을 추천했습니다. 전 세계 약 150개 TED Circles에서 동일한 주제로 진행하되, 각자가 4개의 영상중에서 하나 혹은 두개를 선택하여 시청하게 됩니다.

TEDxSeoul이 진행하는 'TED Circles hosted by TEDxSeoul'에서는 아래 4개의 영상 중, 에릭 리우와 트리스탄 해리스의 TED 강연을 선택하였는데요, 미리 시청하고 온라인 모임에서 소감과 의견을 나누는 방식으로 진행된다고 합니다. 또한 그동안 매월 오프라인 모임으로 진행했던 것과는 달리 이번에는 온라인으로 모임을 진행한다고 하지요. 4월 총선을 앞두고 권력과 소셜미디어에 대해 살펴보면서 깨어있는 시민으로써 우리가 어떻게 이들을 활용할 수 있을지에 대한 이야기를 나눈다고 하네요!

1. 에릭 리우 : 권력을 어떻게 이해할 것인가

(Eric Liu : How to understand power)

매일 우리는 타인이 만들어놓은 권력 체계 안에서 움직입니다. 그러나 권력은 편하게 대화하기 어려운 주제죠. 왜일까요? 에릭 리우는 권력의 여섯 가지 요소를 소개하고 어떻게 이를 이해하는가가 영향력 있는 시민이 되는 방법임을 설명합니다.

- In the civic arena, which source of power do you experience most often? How does it affect you?

- Can you think of a time when you had power in the civic arena (e.g. you led a discussion, volunteered to help others achieve a goal)? If so, what checks and balances, if any, were in place to keep you from abusing your position?

- How can 'power' and 'powerlessness' be balanced? What can you do to be more powerful in everyday life? (Additional resource: Ideas blog post - 5 basic skills of power, and how you can learn to use them)

- Choose a topic that your local officials are debating and you feel strongly about. Using the citizenship skills described, what strategies might you use to engage in the debate?

2. 데이브 메슬린 : 무관심에 대한 해결책

지역 정치, 즉 학교, 지역구, 구의회 선거들이 우리가 살고 있는 곳과 마주칩니다. 그럼 우리 중 더 많은 사람들이 실제로 관여하는 건 어떨까요? 무관심인가요? 데이브 메슬린은 아니라고 말합니다. 그는 우리가 진정으로 신경 쓸 때조차도 우리 공동체에 참여하지 못하게 하는 7가지 장벽을 찾아냅니다.

- Meslin redefines apathy as a “complex web of cultural barriers that reinforces disengagement”. With that interpretation, what rating would you give to the apathy of your community? Why?

- How much is your community supporting or discouraging your involvement? How does that impact the trust you have in your community?

- Which two of Meslin's catalysts (e.g. city hall, public space, media, leadership, political parties, charitable status, elections) do you think are the most influential in your society? Why?

- Meslin offers suggestions on how to knock down the barriers to engagement. Which do you think would be most impactful? What are some methods not mentioned in the talk that might encourage more participation?

3. 트리스탄 해리스 : 소수의 인터넷 기업들이 매일 수십억 명의 마음을 조정하고 있습니다.

(Tristan Harris : How a handful of tech companies control billions of minds every day)

소수의 인터넷 기업에서 일하는 소수의 사람들이 매일 수십억 사람들의 생각을 조종하고 있습니다. 디자인 사상가 트리스탄 해리스(Tristan Harris)는 페이스북의 알림 메세지에서부터 스냅챗의 스냅스트리크 기능과 유튜브의 자동재생 기능에 이르기까지, 이 모든 기술이 우리의 관심을 끌려는 단 하나의 목적을 두고 경쟁하고 있다고 말합니다. 트리스탄 해리스는 이런 인터넷 기업들이 어떻게 우리의 심리를 이용해 수익을 얻고 있는지 보여주며, 인터넷 기술이 우리가 원하는 삶을 살 수 있도록 돕기 위해서는 인터넷 서비스 설계에서 디자인 르네상스가 필요하다고 주장합니다.

- Harris argues that as a consequence of maintaining our attention, tech companies are eroding our agency, changing our relationships, and altering our conversations. How have you encountered this in your life? How do you feel about it?

- How do you think Harris' three changes might help us regain power over these unintended consequences? (e.g. acknowledge we are persuadable, hold the persuader accountable to the goals of the persuadee, design to empower the things people want.)

- Do you think it is possible for tech companies to foster meaningful connections while remaining profitable, or is the attention-grabbing, “race to the bottom” the only means of survival? Why/why not?

- Harris imagines a social media that helps us gather offline with the people we care about or redirects controversial conversations to hosted dinner parties. What ideas do you have to reformulate our interactions with social media so it is more of a help than a hindrance?

4. 피아 만치니 : 인터넷 시대에 민주주의를 발전시키는 법

(Pia Mancini : How to upgrade democracy for the internet age)

피아 만치니와 그녀의 동료들은 아르헨티나를 넘어서 민주주의를 개선하려고 합니다. 그들의 오픈 소스 모바일 소프트웨어를 통해 그들은 시민들을 의결 과정에 참여하게 하고 그들의 목소리를 들을 입후보자들을 선출합니다.

- How do you respond to our political systems: with more silence (disengagement) or with more noise (engagement)?

- How much do you trust your country's political system? How much more would you trust it if your representatives voted in accordance with what citizens decided on a democracy app?

- Mancini encourages networks and technologies to build alliances, not power vacuums, to be heard. “If the internet is the new printing press”, what democratic institutions do you want to build in the new internet era? - Mancini believes “our political system can be transformed, not by subverting it [or] destroying it, but by rewiring it with the tools that [the] internet affords us now.” What kind of tech-based upgrades would you like to see implemented in your political system?
